Creating Hawaiʻi’s digital knowledge commons: An imperative for equitable knowledge governance and community-intelligence stewardship*
In knowledge societies, the attainability of socioecologically benign economic diversification is based on adequate levels of a community’s intellectual well-being, in its broadest sense. Hawaiʻi’s knowledge metabolism remains severely disrupted by powerful external interference. To reclaim a locus of control over the community’s critical knowledge assets, the presentation suggests specific remedial strategies and capacity-building instruments in the form of community-owned and operated digital knowledge commons.

Wednesday, June 17, 2020 @11:30 a.m. HST | Second Imaginarium Confab
You can’ t be what you can’t see*
If you wish to be part of this public dreaming confab, please join us in the following thought experiment. Imagine that ten years from now, say on December 31, 2030, when reading your favorite local news source, you spot several headlines that you believe best capture Hawaiʻi’s previous decade’s accomplishments in creating a healthy, equitable, self-sufficient, and ecologically sustainable community. Please email us your visions before the event at firstname.lastname@example.org. Each item should comprise a title/subtitle and 2-3 sentences capturing the essence of the news. For example:
Title: 109,000 Acres of Former DOD Pōhakuloa Training Area on the Big Island to Become a Natural Reserve
Subtitle: Endangered wildlife to thrive again as tanks and other military paraphernalia removed from the area
Gist/background: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, elected U.S. president in 2028 by a broad coalition of progressive democratic forces, succeeded in halting the rampant spread of militarism and the nation’s aggressive foreign policy. Thousands of military bases around the world and domestic bases were dismantled; many freed lands became living labs for biodiversity restoration. Former soldiers were retrained as environmental stewards. They are at the forefront of healing the scars of the defense sector’s technogenic pressures on nature and communities.
