Creating Sustainable Urban Design Attitudes

While architects foremost design and construct the built environment, the profession equally shapes the perceptions and senses of society. Though the ultimate goal that many architects and urban designers strive to achieve is affecting the attitudes of those that inhabit the spaces and cities they construct.

The major cities that exist today feature established and developed built fabrics and infrastructures. This fact makes it substantially difficult to redevelop or redesign an urban area to be more sustainable on a large scale.

I believe that an effective method to address urban sustainability is to primarily change the mindset and attitudes of the inhabitants of an urban area. To positively create a sustainable environment those who exist in this environment must strive to construct and maintain an overall sustainable mindset.

Attitudes that condone a sustainable urban environment feature interest and care for the community rather than the individual, great personal responsibility for respecting the natural environment, and an initiative to positively create a sustainable urban system. Specifically, this could include effective public transportation, just resource distribution and disposal, and mass sustainable energy production.
