6/14 Sea Grant Boat Ride
Thanks to Captain Carson and Puerto Rico’s Sea Grant Director, we were able to view coastal damage along the coast of Rincon via boat. The damage is extensive. Our guides were able to inform us of stories during response and recovery to give us a better understanding of what happened. While listening, what really hit me is the high probability of similar coastal storm outcomes in Hawaii. Famous surf, laid-back atmosphere, coastal development, tourism economy, and many other similarities make Rincon remind me of Oahu’s North Shore. The time with Sea Grant gave me a renewed vision on the importance of what this practicum is researching and delivering. The lessons learned and shared with us from our Puerto Rico partners will save lives and livelihoods from natural hazards in the future. Honolulu has the potential to be the first city ever to create a pre-disaster recovery plan before a disaster strikes. There is no time for excuses or delay.
